“Duel” by Paul Mathieu

The story of a Victorian scandal. Two wealthy young men, Henry Chaplin, a friend of Royalty, and the wild and reckless Harry, 4th Marquis of Hastings, vied for the hand of Lady Florence Paget. On the eve of the wedding, Lady Florence jilted Chaplin and eloped with the Marquis! The subsequent “duel” was fought on the racecourses of England. The Marquis owned a string of racehorses, so Chaplin purchased horses to challenge his rival. The final outcome had consequences for all concerned. Some material has come from the Hastings archive held by Ashby museum. (hardback)
